CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG

A Mongolian nomad family find themselves in disagreement when the oldest daughter, Nansal, finds a dog and brings it home. Believing that it is responsible for attacking his sheep, her father refuses to allow her to keep it. When it’s time for the family to move on, Nansal must decide whether to defy her father and take her new friend with them. Oscar-nominated director Byambasuren’s follow up to the hugely successful THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL is a thought provoking mix of documentary and drama that tells the story of the age-old bond between man and dog, a bond which experiences a new twist through the eternal cycle of reincarnation in Mongolia.

Help bring a New York indie to the big screen...

Hi,

I'm helping to promote the indie film, East Broadway. The writer/director/star, Fay Ann Lee, is working hard right now to get a distribution deal to get the film in theaters and needs emails to print and take along to a meeting with a distributor THIS Wednesday (10/18/06). If you have a moment, please check out the website: http://www.eastbroadwaythemovie.com and if the film appeals to you, please follow the instructions below from an email Fay recently sent out. Also, even if the film is not your cup of tea, please, please pass this info along to anyone whom you think might like it!

Thanks a million.
E.S. Putnam

****

EB is now at a critical juncture. We've been approached by an interested distributor who is asking me to show them a fan base. So, here is how you can help --

Tell 5 of your friends about East Broadway and ask them to check out the website. If they think this film is something they might enjoy, have them write to eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com to tell us that. We need to show that this is a movie with broad appeal. If I get enough support through word-of-mouth, we will be able to get this movie released. But time is of the essence. I need to basically print out a ton of e-mails in the next 4 days so that I can take them to a meeting early next week.

And, if you can, please write to us with the following important information:

1. Where are you from? (so that we can show where else other than NY/L.A. we would release the film)
2. Why does this film appeal to you?
3. Do you think this film would be appealing to your friends and family?
4. Tell your friends to keep introducing the film to 5 friends and have them write to us at eastbroadwaymovie@gmail.com

Again, your e-mails have been a wonderful surprise and so very much welcomed. This grassroots campaigning becomes the most important marketing strategy of all for independent films, so thank you all for being a huge part of this momentum.

Many many thanks,
Fay Ann Lee

fans of SPUN

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

details: http://www.firstwarmnight.com

This is heat + hedonism.

This is a free, un-permitted, roving renegade explosion
of music and performance, flaming hula-hoops, melting
ice cream, wanton stilt walkers, delicate poster art,
battling brass bands, renegade sound systems, fireworks
and rockets, impulsive performance, canyons of
concrete, shadows of steel, with the calm of the
waterfront against a city of dreamers.

This is wicked + whimsy.

Dozens of dedicated event makers have worked to lay the
groundwork. But this night is about you. Bring your
performance, your music, your boom box and bass drums,
bring your fire sticks, your stilts, public poetry and
private passions, bring your wicked, breathe your
whimsy, you are the performer and this is your stage.
This is the night you dream of.

This is risk + revelry.

This event is unpermitted. This is an open celebration
of liberation, an escape of the clamp-down, a
reclaiming of streets, a making of mischief and the
waking of the wild season. It's been a long dark
winter - this is our night to burn bright.

With that you should keep these IMPORTANT issues in mind:

-	Call the info line for updated information
throughout the event. The number is: 212.252.2051

-	Sign up at the website for text messages to keep
abreast of changes.

-	Pay attention to coaxers wearing wings, they know where
to go and will be guiding you.

-	This is your event as it is ours, this is a community
effort. Watch out for yourself and the people around you.

-	We have legal support if anything goes awry.

-	Leave no trace. Keep all garbage with you and dispose
of it in the proper place.

You need to bring: Metrocards, small gifts and
tradeables, wings, *your own drinks*, body paint,
fireworks and rocketships, water, the fire inside you,
the heat between us, the warmth on the street to
ignite, to explode.

On Weather: We have been watching the weather reports
incredibly closely for the past several weeks. All
detailed weather reports say that Saturday will be
clearing with a small chance of thunderstorms. We like
static, we like electricity, but all in moderation. We
feel in our centers that the weather is going to clear
into a gorgeously warm night with a low in the 60's,
the first weekend night it will be that warm. However,
we have no control.

If the weather takes a turn for the ugly, for the
torrential or for the apocalyptic, call the info line
(212.252.2051) check your text messages, and check your
e-mail in case of major changes to our plan of action.

Bring a jacket, this is an *all night event* and the
heat of our Saturday will cool into a crisp Sunday
morning.

http://www.firstwarmnight.com

This is it. This is the night you dream of.

Just saw it tonight, and I highly recommend it. The Yes Men make me proud to be an artist, but they also make most art look really lame by comparison. God they have balls.

But go see it this week if you're gonna see it! How well it does in NYC this week will determine how much national distribution it will get.

Review: American Splendor

There is a special place in my heart for this amazing movie. Not just a strikingly unique blend of acting, animation, documentary, and fantasy -- it's also an introduction to a most unusual and remarkable chronicler of modern American life.

For decades, Harvey Pekar has written (and often self-published) a legendary underground comic book called American Splendor that offers a slice of life in blue-collar Cleveland. Before seeing this film, I knew nothing about Pekar and had never read his stuff. Now I'm a huge fan. The man has an amazing gift for combining existential angst with (sometimes grudging) human warmth. The filmmakers manage to capture all that, and they deliver a delightfully original and entertaining movie.

Fellini & Truffaut (x/post)

Saw a wonderful double bill last night at Symphony Space in Manhattan -- Fellini's "8 1/2" and Truffaut's "Day for Night", two great movies about the process of making movies and the struggles of an artistic director. The first is, of course, more introspective, and the second more lighthearted. But both films are made by people who love movies for people who love movies. What a treat!

As many people are out there bringing grassroots audiences to Robot
Stories, an independent film with a predominantly Asian American cast, I felt it was imperative to do the same especially since Greg is my boyfriend.

Please forward this message widely and come out and support the film. It opens in NY on Feb. 13th at Cinema Village on 12th Street between
University and 5th Ave. and in Silver Springs, Maryland, Los Angeles, Berkeley, Boston, and Chicago in the next few weeks/months. See below for details and website information.

Thanks very much!

Dear friends,

I just wanted to put out a plug for a wonderful new film by the
Incredibly talented Asian American filmmaker Greg Pak (who is a really good guy, to boot). The film is called ROBOT STORIES and it's a really smart, well-written, excellently acted film with lots of heart and humor (and robots!), and features much of the Asian American filmmaking community
here in NYC (both cast and crew.)

Because this a small independent film that doesn't have a huge
distributor behind it, they are relying heavily on word-of-mouth to help spread the word. So please, mark your calendars for the weekend of February 13th and come out to support this film! And, by the way, it's crucial that
everyone come out that first weekend because without a strong box office showing, there won't be a second weekend!

Hope to see you at Robot Stories...
Michelle

******************************
Just two weeks until New York City theatrical release! Please help
spread the word!
The weekend of Friday, February 13 may be the most important few days in the entire life of "Robot Stories" -- it's the theatrical premiere of
the film in New York City at the Cinema Village, 22 E. 12th Street. Please, please, please come see the film and spread the word to your friends and family in New York City. To get a second week in New York, we need to
do great business our first weekend -- the theater will decide Monday
morning which films to keep for the next week. And a number of other theaters are waiting to see how we do in New York before they book us in their towns. This is the big one, folks! Whether you're a supporter of truly independent media, Asian American film, smart genre storytelling, emotionally honest cinema, or just plain fun moviemaking, please
consider helping us get folks in that theater during the opening weekend!

Convinced? Visit www.robotstories.net for downloadable flyers and a cut-and-pastable blurb you can send all your friends. Or just cut and paste the following blurb into a new email and send it to your friends, along with a personal note with your own take
on the film:

"Robot Stories"
Over 23 film festival awards
85 minutes, 35mm color
April 2 in St. Louis
April 16 in San Francisco and Berkeley

Winner of over 23 film festival awards, "Robot Stories" is science fiction from the heart, four stories in which utterly human characters struggle to connect in a world of robot babies and android office
workers.

The stories include: My Robot Baby, in which a couple (Tamlyn Tomita and James Saito) must care for a robot baby before adopting a human child;
The Robot Fixer, in which a mother (Wai Ching Ho, Best Actress, St. Louis
Int'l Film Festival and Puchon Int'l Fantastic Film Festival) tries to connect with her dying son by completing his toy robot collection; Machine Love, in which an office worker android (Greg Pak) learns that he, too, needs love; and Clay, in which an old sculptor (Sab Shimono) must choose between natural death and digital immortality.

John Petrakis of the Chicago Tribune calls the film "one of the
most moving pieces I've seen all year" while Entertainment Insiders calls it "the kind of science fiction sophisticated audiences crave and deserve."

Awards include the Special Jury Award from Emotional Truth from the Florida Film Festival; Best Feature Film honors from the Rhode Island
Int'l Film Festival, the Sci Fi London Film Festival, the DC APA Film
Festival, and the SF Korean American Media Arts Festival; and Audience Awards from the Fantastisk Film Festival in Sweden, the Boston Fantastic Film Festival, and the Michigan Independent Film Festival.

Writer and Director: Greg Pak

Wow. Must viewing. This is a unique, powerful, altogether extraordinary film. Superb technique, unbelievably fresh (timeless) messages, and maybe the best example of moral relativism I've ever seen on the big screen. This review may sound sort of high-brow, but seeing this movie is a visceral experience -- as good or better than any Hollywood action flick. Showing now on two screens at Film Forum.

Review: Lost in Translation

I saw this movie with a friend who complained that it was too long, too slow, and too boring. I disagreed on all counts. It does have a slow, patient rhythm, which I thought was well-suited to its main characters, played by Bill Murray and the celebrated Scarlett Johannsen. They convincingly and touchingly portray two people who are stuck in their lives, essentially just treading water.

The film's reflective, meditative pace also fits nicely into its Japanese setting. Many of the best Japanese films are slow, patient, and meditative -- but if we can allow ourselves to come down from our MTV-induced manic panic, and become attuned to nuance instead of noise, it's amazing how much we can learn about people, about life, and about ourselves.

No, not the Hitchcock thriller. This version of Spellbound is a terrific documentary about several contestants in the National Spelling Bee. It's at turns funny, suspenseful, moving, and provocative. This was one of the most enjoyable films I saw this year. You can't see it and not come away with a smile on your face.

Spellbound is not showing currently in New York, but will be coming to Symphony Space for a limited run January 3-10. Don't miss it!

Yuck. What a good movie. Yucky because it's scary and unsettling. Scary because it's made in a dispassionate, alienated style. Unsettling because it offers no easy explanations for incidents of sociopathic violence from alienated teens. Scary because it's true.

This is not an easy movie to enjoy. It has a quasi-documentary feel, and for long stretches it can seem like nothing is happening. And then the ennui of suburban existence erupts into gratuitous displays of self-gratification with the most horrifying results. Yuck. It's really good.

Review: The Station Agent

I like "small" films about people in real-life situations. Of course, there are plenty of movies made every year that meet that description and that are also boring, pretentious, or just plain unwatchable.

Once in a while, though, someone makes a film that really delivers on the premise of real people in real relationships and how they respond to each other. "The Station Agent" is one of those. It's a movie with very little action, almost no plot, and lots of apparently static sequences. But it draws the viewer in, letting us enter the world on the screen, until we feel we know and care about the characters. It's certainly not a perfect film -- obviously made on a low budget, and with a couple of awkward scenes -- but its virtues far outweigh its flaws. I loved this movie, and did not want it to end.

Review: The Fog of War

2003 has been called, for good reason, the Year of the Documentary. Half of the titles on my personal Ten Best list are documentaries. Among them is "The Fog of War", Errol Morris's study of Robert S. McNamara.

One of the most important films of the year, "The Fog of War" should be required viewing for anyone planning to vote in the 2004 presidential election. It not only teaches valuable (and riveting) lessons about American history and foreign policy, it also shows clearly that we must be skeptical of leaders who claim to have all the answers. Nothing is as simple as it seems. That's why documentary films, which show us truth much stranger than fiction, often address complicated questions more meaningfully than do traditional feature films.

This is a new French documentary, currently playing at Cinema Village on 12th Street in Manhattan. The film offers a gentle and touching look at a now-renowned teacher in modern-day France. Believe it or not, he teaches a dozen or so children of all ages in a one-room schoolhouse located in a remote farming district. It's a quiet film, not spectacular, not overly dramatic, not fast-paced...just a few months in the lives of a teacher and his kids.

In a year of great documentaries, many of them harsh and harrowing, this is a refreshing change of pace. If you see it, expect to be moved, and possibly changed.
